A
few things you need to consider when planning your web site
- You
will need a place to store your web pages. You can
store it either on our server or through the ISP of your choice. If
you do not already have an Internet Service Provider, we can help
you select one. It's important that your internet provider offers
full support for commercial web sites including custom domain names,
and high bandwidth connections. Consider our hosting packages as a powerful yet inexpensive home
for your web site.
- You will need a URL.
This is your Internet address. Once people know this address they
will be able to find your new site. We recommend a custom domain like
www.yourcompany.com. This makes your address easy for your customer
to find and remember. If you move your web site in the future, a custom
domain name will make this move completely transparent to your customers.
They will not have to learn new web or e-mail addresses, many online
businesses have lost customers due to changes in web or e-mail addresses.
It also avoids the problems associated with re-registering your web
site on hundreds of search engines. If you don't already have a unique
domain name, we can take care of these details for you.
- You will need an E-mail address.
Your web site visitors will need to contact you and send you information
via e-mail. This address can be provided by your ISP or through your
web site on our server. Additional e-mail addresses are inexpensive
and can be provided for other staff members in your company.
- Gather written information about
your company. As part of the development process for
your web site, we need to learn as much as possible about your company
and products or services. We will use this information to develop
the HTML (the language of the internet) code that makes your web site.
- Gather graphics associated with
your company, your product or yourself. Photos and brochures
are a good source of graphics for your site. A web site must be visually
appealing and interesting so graphics are an important component.
We will use your graphics to create electronic versions which will
be displayed on your site.
- Think about your desired layout.
You know your company best, but we will be happy to assist you in
organizing and planning your layout. Think about the major pages you
want on the site such as general company information and information
on individual products or services.
- Surf the World Wide Web.
Explore the web sites of your competitors, suppliers and dealers.
Get ideas from exploring the internet of what you like and don't like
on these other sites. The use of examples as visual aids can be extremely
helpful in conveying your ideas to us.
- Think about links you might want
to have to other sites. You may want to link to other sites
which complement your own such as distributors, suppliers, product
information and links that might be of interest to your customers.
- Prepare to register your new site with
search engines. You will need to provide us with some
keywords and a brief description of your site in order for search
engines to properly classify and find your site. We will give you
more information about how to do this when the time comes but for
a start, write down every word that can be used to describe your site.
For example, a produce wholesaler might use vegetable, food, grocery,
store, and produce as a few of the keywords related to their web site
- Plan how you will keep your site
information up to date. As your company and product
line changes, so will the information you require on your web site.
Will you be doing the maintenance yourself or will we be making those
changes for you.
